Personal interpreter of the President of Bulgaria tells RUDN students about digital technologies for interpreting

Boris Naimushin, interpreter of Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov (2002-2012), Head of the Department of English Philology (New Bulgarian University, Sofia, Bulgaria) told students and teachers of RUDN Law Institute about the role of digital resources in training interpreters in conditions of digitalization of the society of the 21st century.

March 19, the well-known interpreter and recognized expert in the field of didactic interpretation, Boris Naimushin, spoke at the scientific webinar of the Department of Foreign Languages of the Law Institute of the RUDN University.

“In the digital age, the working conditions of interpreters are changing. Accordingly, new criteria for their professional training are being formed, new requirements are being placed on the methods and resources for training future specialists, ” said Boris Naimushin.

The scholar and practitioner who completed a special course on didactic interpretation at the University of Geneva (Switzerland) stressed that training of interpreters should be as close as possible to the real conditions of their future profession, using the formats of simulations of the negotiation process, translation contests, and engaging students in the preparation of materials for real events involving interpreters.

“Today the interpreter often has less time to prepare for the event, while the factual material is thematically more complex and larger in volume. Under these conditions, one should not abandon digital resources that will help an interpreter to systematize language and thematic data, ”- said Boris Naimushin.

The guest of the seminar offered examples of the use of modern digital platforms for the preparation of interpreters, highlighted the importance of forecasting and designing cognitive processes in this kind of activity, shared his methodological experience in organizing practical exercises on interpretation using digital resources.

“Interpretation today is an integral part of the activities of international organizations, state and public structures, digital technologies cannot replace a “live” interpreter, but can significantly help them if they know how to use these technologies adequately to the situation. Therefore, it is very important to help students master modern digital technologies for interpreting,” said Yulia Nozdracheva, seminar participant, graduate of the master's program“ Interpreter in the system of public services and institutions (2018), intern-translator for the cooperation program of the RUDN University and the Office of  Jiri Mastalka, member of the European Parliament (Belgium, Brussels, 2018).
